Contoured features, including
grooves and cavities, have been machined in bores, shafts, flat
surfaces, OD and ID conical surface, and various combinations
of them. For example, bore and thrust surface bearing grooves,
have been machined on the same component simultaneously. Typical
feature depths are 2-20 microns although, some applications involve
much larger depths.
The accompanying profile
scan, of several grooves, illustrates the uniform characteristics
of µECM formed geometry. Six micron deep
grooves, approximately 300 microns wide, were machined at a spacing
of approximately 0.5 millimeter.

Shaft and bore grooving for fluid and air bearings
are typical of the micro grooving applications.
